Clint walked down the stairs better than he had walked up the stairs three days ago, but that didn’t make her happy. Lydia felt as if her heart were breaking once again. He had said he would be back, but she just couldn’t wrap her head around it. It felt like he was walking out on their life together. She’d seen him looking at their engagement photo with an expression of sorrow. Something wasn’t right in their relationship, and no matter how many times he professed his love, she felt like she was losing him. Add that to the fact that he thought it was necessary to be on his own for one to two months, it was more than she could take.

She smiled and waved as Drake and Clint drove away in the monster truck, then she shut the door and gave in to tears. The only saving grace was that her parents were in San Antonio with Beth and she didn’t have to deal with their presence in the duplex next door. Their presence would have been catastrophic.

Maybe Clint finally sensed her failure. How was she ever going to face him when he found out?

She went over to the mantle and picked up the engagement picture that was the happiest moment of her life and hugged it to her breast.

“Is that it?” She asked Clint. “Is that what’s wrong?”

She looked down at the photo again and traced the lines of his face, remembering the party in Mason’s backyard. Tears welled before she sucked them down.

“Nope, not going to do it. I’m finally going to face this head-on. But when he’s better. Not now.”

She put down the photo and lifted her chin. It was time to get back into the saddle and call Ed Sherman. Her boss was going to kill her. First, she asked for time off, now she was going to ask to be put back on the payroll for two months, at least until Clint came back home. Or maybe even past then.

She shook her head. What the hell did she know about the future? She just knew she needed to do something and do it now.

When she got Ed’s voicemail, she strode over to the command center that she and Clint had used hundreds of times. It had five monitors, two laptops, and a state-of-the-art tower that she’d dare anybody to hack. She stretched her fingers, then fired things up. As soon as she was up and running, she got two pings.

Rylie and Melvin. She answered Rylie first.
